Background and Business Description

AyurVAID Hospitals is a pioneering chain of new generation Ayurveda hospitals, dedicated to applying Ayurveda (India’s traditional system of medicine)  to solve modern health problems. Now with six hospitals across India (in Kochi, Bangalore, Chennai, Hubli and Mumbai) and a growing network of Physicians, AyurVAID has become the biggest chain of Ayurveda hospitals in India and demonstrated strong clinical outputs over the past three years of operations. The organization has a four pronged approach to healthcare focused on the well being of the whole body, establishing sustained care, building trust between patients and caregivers and empowering patients and families to take control of their own health.

AyurVAID believes that the ultimate model of corporate social responsibility is to build an inclusive but commercial business model: where low-income consumers are genuine customers with the dignity to choose and participate and which, critically, can run on a sustainable and scalable basis so as to impact the maximum number of people.

To that end, AyurVAID has developed the “AyurSEVA” brand, which is a community initiative of AyurVAID Hospitals, offering AyurVAID services at affordable rates to low-income communities typically earning between US$ 125 - 175 per month. With identical medical standards, AyurSEVA units are able to bring down the cost of treatment by offering a general ward format and employing a lower cost of establishment and operations.

The result is an in-patient service offering for chronic disease at the rate of Rs 750/- (US$ 19) per day, even in cities like Mumbai and Bangalore. By taking this approach, AYurVAID is increasing access to healthcare for the poor in a sustainable and scalable manner, while simultaneously expanding AyurVAID’s market presence and building a long-term customer base for the company.

AyurVAID is now operating six small to medium sized hospitals in three neighboring states: two hospitals in Kerala, three in Karnataka and one in Maharastra. The hospitals are located in urban areas and three of them in the big cities of Mumbai and Bangalore. By using low-cost and cross-subsidy models, as well as partnerships with leading insurance players, AyurVAID is bringing affordable services to low-income communities, increasing both the quality and the accessibility of treatment available.

AyurVAID is a recipient of a Rs 4.5 Crores investment from the Acumen Fund and has global ambitions for expanding its integrated, affordable wellness model beyond India.
