Social Ventures that qualify for the catalogue can be categorized into three broad fields. Please also refer to our Marketplace - Models section for detailed information.

1) Charities with Sustainable Commercial Activity: These are charities that have a trading activity which generates revenue. This trading activity is supported by user or contract fees for the provided product and service, rather than by grants. The commercial activity should breakeven, and in cases where it generates excess profits, these are channelled back to the charity.

2) Socially Driven Businesses: These are businesses that are at core socially designed and driven. These ventures are typically started to provide a social product / service to the target market and fills a product / service gap that is usually the responsibility of the public sector. At least breaking even or even achieving profitability, excess profits are usually reinvested back into the business for further expansion. Profit distribution to stakeholders are in the form of dividends or bonuses, it would however be limited and would depend on each company’s policy and mandate. Socially driven businesses want to maximise the social and environment impact from their activity.

3) Socially Responsible Businesses: These businesses operate in many ways like a traditional for profit business, but also contribute to some social or environmental good through ethical and responsible business practices and so it is engrained in their mission. As these enterprises are run like commercial businesses, profits generated through activities may be distributed to stakeholders but there is also a strong contribution back to their community or the environment. Social / environment as well as financial outcomes are maximised equally by socially responsible businesses.
