On October 29th Ashoka and Avantage Ventures co-hosted Dialogue with Ashoka & Avantage Ventures “Affordable Healthcare and its Applications in China” at the Blue Frog in Beijing. David Green, an Ashoka fellow working to provide the underprivileged with affordable corrective intraocular lenses and hearing aids, lead the discussion. David spoke on his experiences with ‘compassionate capitalism’ whereby profits gained from privileged countries are used to subsidize quality treatment in developing areas. He also recounted his experiences working to bring multinationals, local governments, NGOs and small businesses together to bring about healthcare solutions to countries where financial resources are limited.
The speaker portion of the event was followed by a lively question & answer session moderated by Avantage Ventures founder, Yvonne Li. A diverse group of attendees from the education, rural development, and healthcare sectors as well as representatives from both Ashoka and Avantage Ventures discussed the challenges and opportunities of operating social businesses in China, and bringing affordable healthcare and other solutions to the Chinese society. The overall positive feedback and uplifting atmosphere of the lunch engagement ensures that there will be more events to follow in the coming weeks.
